Amaranth Yatra is the sojourn in search of faith and inner peace to the holy abode of Lord Shiva. Settled at an elevation of 3,888m (12,756 ft.), the Amarnath Cave is surrounded by mighty mountains and is covered in snow almost throughout the year. During this time, a stalagmite is formed as the water from the cave falls on the floor. The shape so formed is believed to be Shiv lingam by Hindus.
As soon as the summer season begins, the stalagmite starts to wax and wane. Which is linked with the phases of the moon reaching its height in the summer festival. This is the time when the Amarnath Cave opens doors for the pilgrims to take blessings of Lord Shiva.
